Is Burnout linked to nutrition load?
Jun 30, 2023
I had the humbling pleasure of attending a workshop in Canada as the final part of my practitioner's certification. One of the millions of things I learned on this journey was one of the body's ways of showing the lack of nutrients in the body. The "lunula" or half moons on the fingernails show our nutrient load, and I had none!
Not one! How can this be? I've always had a typical well-rounded English diet. Don't get me wrong, the odd sweet treat and carb overload day would creep in from time to time. But always had a good mix of protein carbs and fats. A balanced diet if you will. So to find out I was holding no nutrition at all was a complete shock, to say the least.
It's common knowledge that Nutrients in food are essential for our bodies to function properly. They include macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
After completing my certification & returning to the UK, I took up a bare-bones naturopathy course to see what more information I could find. I was horrified to learn that our raw foods nutrients had dropped dramatically since the 1970s, So what was healthy and Nutritious for our parents, wasn't so much for us anymore. If we look at disease statistics they rise at pretty much the same rate as the availability of processed foods & use of pesticides. This can't be a coincidence!
Naturally, I wanted to know why, who wouldn't right? I found myself in research mode & looking at organic non-GMO versus "ordinary grown fruits & veg, its common knowledge Organic food is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, while non-organic food is grown using these chemicals. Organic food is often thought to be healthier and better for the environment, studies suggest that organic food has higher nutrient levels than non-organic food.
So I set about sourcing organic non-GMO foods, wow what a difference in texture, taste & colour! The variety of colours on my plate lit me up, I actually liked eating tomatoes, something I've never been able to stomach.
Next, I wanted to know how chemicals affect all food. Not only in taste and texture but nutrient load too. What effects was this having on the human body, other than reducing the nutrition load? My research led me to additives & the chemicals used to wash, preserve & process the foods in our homes. WOW, what an eye-opening moment this was. I dare you to look up how they decaffeinate coffee - blahhhh!
These nasty & frankly unnecessary chemicals cause havoc with our endocrine system as well as the nervous system, digestive system. And can cause a leaky gut and the possible onset of a number of diseases. Which can cause a huge knock-on effect throughout our bodies.
We wouldn't dream of putting diesel in a finely tuned petrol Ferrari and expect it to not cough and splutter down the road until it grinds to a halt, right? We’d use the finest fuel and engine additives to ensure the fine piece of engineering ran at its best possible performance.
So why aren’t we doing the same for our bodies?, In my opinion, our bodies are the most crucial piece of engineering we will ever have the pleasure of owning. So naturally the fuel we use for it should be at its highest possible quality. Unfortunately, our Society has become an instant gratification, fasted paced rat race. We have become so wrapped up in fulfilling expectations of workplaces, family, friends, governing bodies & social media. We have forgotten about preparing wholesome raw foods to fuel our finely tuned machine properly.
If our physical Body isn’t performing to its potential, partly due to the chemicals we put in it & on it, this can and will cause a knock-on, not only through the physical system but our mental and emotional state can also be impacted massively too.
